Welcome to an epic week of summer explorations. This will be a week to remember. These campers are growing older and that means we can stretch our edges and delve deeper into the art of exploration. We're excited to offer an overnight camping experience at Deception Pass State Park where we'll learn the basics of camping and explore a bounty of exciting new locations.

2017 Schedule

MONDAY: Arroyo Park, 9:30-4:00PM

Our local treasure in the Chuckanuts endlessly yields adventure and exploration. With Chuckanut Creek rushing through it's base and the steep flanks of Chuckanut Mountain on it's edge, Arroyo Park offers challenging terrain and a pristine riparian zone for spawning salmon. In mid-spring we’ll get to find out what this patch of wild land is up to, learning from the inhabitants and playing with them. Due to the tricky drop-off location we have opted to have parents drop-off and pick-up at North Chuckanut Mountain Trailhead.

Drop-off and pick-up: From Fairhaven head south on Chuckanut Drive. Just past the intersection with Old Samish there will be a parking lot on your left with a sign saying “North Chuckanut Mountain Trailhead.” Map.

TUESDAY: North Galbraith Mountain, 9:30-4:00PM

We’ll check out a patch of wilderness with an interesting living history. We’ll explore the various trails, do some authentic navigation, play plenty of games, and consider the role of people in this land. We’ll use our Art of Wandering Skills to navigate Galbraith. Come prepared for adventure and discovery as we pick a location and navigate our way through it. Of course, there will be time for some games, challenges, and open exploration. Let’s see what we can find out there.

Drop-off and pick-up: Drive east on Lakeway Drive from I-5 for approximately 2 miles. Turn right on Birch Street and continue to the end of the road 0.3 miles. Map.

WEDNESDAY: Bakerview Beach, 9:30-4:00PM

Bakerview Beach is one of the most memorable locations we will visit during our week of explorations. Prepare for epic tide flats filled with curious creatures, mud pits, roaming streams, and wide expanses of adventure. We will hike out into the mud flats and adventure into the Nooksack Delta.

Bring your swimsuits and a pair of  water shoes that have a heel and are closed-toed that won't come off. That mud is thick! Hats, sunglasses, extra water and sunscreen will also be key on this outing! Parents make sure to bring a change of clothes and protection for the inside of your car (a large garbage bag works)-- it will be a messy day!

Drop-off and pick-up: Drive west on Eldridge Avenue/Marine Drive approximately 4.5 miles from downtown Bellingham. Turn left on Bancroft Road and drive for 0.1 miles. Turn right at Olympic Way. Meet at the third house on the left (1403 Olympic Way), home of long time Wild Whatcom supporters who graciously let us use their beach access! Map.

Please note: Parking is very limited. We'll be there to meet you, so be prepared for a quick transfer.

THURSDAY: Deception Pass State Park, 9:00-4:00PM Friday (overnight)

We'll say goodbye to parents and hop on the Wild Whatcom bus for a journey south to Deception Pass State Park. We'll spend the day exploring the numerous natural wonders of the surrounding area and then head over to our campsite to pitch tents, cook a meal, and gather around a fire. The next day after waking, we'll journey up the coast to the Padilla Bay Interpretive Center, making sure to investigate any curiosities along the way!

Drop-off and pick-up: Cascade Montessori Middle School, 2710 MacKenzie Ave, Bellingham. Map.
