Salish Sea Camp - Grades 5-6
2018 Session 1: July 9-13 (CANCELLED) Session 2: July 23-27 (FULL - Standby List Available)
Note: includes Thursday night overnight.
As campers growing older that means we can stretch our edges and delve deeper into the art of exploration. We're excited to offer an overnight camping experience at Deception Pass State Park where we'll learn the basics of camping and explore a bounty of exciting new locations.
MONDAY: Arroyo Park, 9:30-4:00PM
Our local treasure in the Chuckanuts endlessly yields adventure and exploration. With Chuckanut Creek rushing through its base and the steep flanks of Chuckanut Mountain on its edge, Arroyo Park offers challenging terrain and a pristine riparian zone for spawning salmon. We’ll get to find out what this patch of wild land is up to, learning from the inhabitants and playing with them. There are a number of ways into Arroyo Park, but we have opted for drop-off and pick-up at North Chuckanut Mountain trailhead.
Drop-off and Pick-up: From I-5, take exit 250 (Old Fairhaven Parkway) and head west to Fairhaven. Turn left onto Chuckanut Drive and head south to just past the intersection with Old Samish Road there will be a parking lot on your left with a sign saying “North Chuckanut Mountain Trailhead.” Map.
TUESDAY: Lookout Mountain, 9:30-4:00PM
Lookout Mountain Forest Preserve is roughly 370 acres and home to creeks, waterfalls, and a deeply wild landscape full of diverse plants and wildlife. Together we'll explore the trails this preserve has to offer, including a 2.2-mile loop, a viewpoint trail that offers stunning vistas of Lake Whatcom, a waterfall loop, and an 8-mile service road that climbs the flanks of Lookout Mountain.
Drop-off and Pick-up: From I-5, take exit 253 (Lakeway Drive) and head east on Lakeway Drive East for 3 miles. Continue for another .5 miles as it turns into Terrace Avenue and then Cable Street. Take a right on Austin Street which then becomes the Lake Louise Road. Follow for 3.3 miles and the parking lot will be on your right. Map.
WEDNESDAY: Bakerview Beach, 9:30-4:00PM
Bakerview Beach is one of the most memorable locations we will visit during our week of explorations. Prepare for epic tide flats filled with curious creatures, mud pits, roaming streams, and wide expanses of adventure. We will hike out into the mud flats and adventure into the Nooksack Delta.
Bring your swimsuit and a pair of water shoes that have a heel and are closed-toed so they won't come off. That mud is thick! Hats, sunglasses, extra water and sunscreen will also be key on this outing! Parents make sure to bring a change of clothes and protection for the inside of your car (a large garbage bag works)-- it will be a messy day!
Drop-off and Pick-up: From I-5, take exit 253 (Lakeway Drive). Head west on Lakeway Drive toward downtown Bellingham. Turn slightly right onto Holly Street and continue through downtown to Eldridge Avenue. Continue on Eldridge Avenue as it turns into Marine Drive. Turn left on Bancroft Road and drive for 0.1 miles. Turn right at Olympic Way. Meet at the third house on the left (1403 Olympic Way), home of The Campbell's who graciously let us use their beach access! Map.
Please note: Parking is very limited. We'll be there to meet you, so be prepared for a quick transfer.
THURSDAY: Deception Pass State Park, 9:00-3:30PM Friday (overnight)
We'll say goodbye to parents and hop on the Wild Whatcom bus for a journey south to Deception Pass State Park. Before we arrive to our campsite, we'll spend the day stretching our edges at Mt. Erie. We will learn about rock climbing with Baker Mountain Guides and will then finish off the day at Deception Pass State Park. We will pitch tents, cook a meal, and go down to the beach to watch the sunset. The next day after waking, we'll journey up the coast to the Padilla Bay Interpretive Center, making sure to investigate any curiosities along the way!
Drop-off and Pick-up: Cascades Montessori Middle School, 2710 McKenzie Avenue, Bellingham. Directions.
